Further Educaton Courses at the Baltic Federal University

There is a provision of further language training courses in The Baltic Federal University. Here one can receive further education which is represented as professional development and retraining courses for linguistic department graduates.

Professional development courses are usually  short courses of spoken language. During them one can learn English, German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Finnish. Oriental languages are also taught in the University – Turkish, Arabic and Chinese. All courses are tailored to meet professional needs of learners and last from 2 to 9 months depending on the programme (there are 2 of them). Classes can be taken in small groups (up to 12 people) or in on-to-one mode (tutorials). These courses are not financed by the state, so one has to pay tuition fees in order to take the course.

1.   Our department also offers Interpreting and Translation Short Courses. One can do a course in Translation (English, German, French, Swedish), or in different kinds of interpreting, such as Conference interpreting, Consecutive interpretation (English, German),Simultaneous interpretation (English, German). All courses last about 4 months. If courses are taken by a graduate, the course graduation document is a certificate.

2.   Retraining language courses provided by our university are made for those graduates of linguistic department (English language), who would like to obtain an extra qualification connected with languages. The University offers 2 retraining programmes for graduates:

1)      Theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures

2)      Translation studies

The courses last for 1 year. After the final examination graduates are awarded with a diploma. The qualifications which can be obtained are ‘Teacher of English language’ or ‘Translator’. These courses are also not free, but there is a small opportunity of becoming a fee-waiver, if only one has a special application from his or her work. The grants and scholarships are not present.

One can enroll on International exams preparation courses, which last on average for 2 months and provide the students with training required for successful examination. Courses available: TestDaF, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS. One can sit the TestDaF exam at the BFU.
